The authorities have banned all articulated trucks from Route 702
This is the road to La Fortuna and Arenal Volcano, going through San Ramon, Angeles Norte and San Lorenzo.
The route was not originally built for the really large 18 wheelers and they could not use it before late 2008. At that time a huge landslide destroyed the old concrete bridge at Rio Cataratas and it was replaced with a wider Bailey bridge. The curves on both sides of the river were also widened allowing the big trucks to use the bridge and the road.
This pleasant and scenic route became a nightmare for all the drivers that, all of a sudden, met with one of these monsters coming in the opposite direction taking both lanes to barely fit in some of the blind curves.
In the last few years, more than half of the accidents on this road involve at least one 18 wheel truck.
So I welcome the decision and expect many more quiet and pleasant trips when driving to Arenal Volcano Costa Rica.
